Millipedes invade Ontario basements and lower levels in large numbers during wet weather. XtermaPro Pest Control eliminates indoor populations and prevents further entry.
Millipedes are slow-moving, cylindrical arthropods dark brown to black, ranging from 2-10cm long with two pairs of legs per body segment. Despite their alarming appearance, they're detritivores, feeding on decaying plant material outdoors. They invade homes in large numbers during heavy rain or drought seeking stable moisture conditions in basements and lower levels.
Signs of millipede invasion:
Millipedes don't bite and aren't dangerous to humans or pets. However, when disturbed some species secrete a fluid that can cause mild skin irritation and staining. Large numbers entering a home are distressing and indicate a moisture and entry-point issue that should be addressed.
Millipede control combines perimeter treatment of the foundation and entry points with recommendations to reduce the organic debris and moisture that attract them. We treat basement entry points, foundation gaps, and the exterior perimeter with residual insecticide.

No. Millipedes do not bite and are not toxic. Some species release a harmless defensive fluid that can stain surfaces and irritate skin if handled, but they pose no real risk. Dogs that lick one may drool but the effect passes quickly.
Millipedes need high moisture to survive. Once they cross into a dry indoor environment, they dehydrate within 24 to 48 hours. A pile of dead millipedes along a wall means they are getting in through a nearby crack, gap, or floor drain.
We apply a residual perimeter treatment around the foundation, dust wall voids and cracks where they shelter, and address the moisture source (mulch against the house, damp basement, clogged gutters). Indoor activity drops within 7 to 14 days.
For long term control, yes. Millipedes cannot survive below 60 percent humidity for more than a day or two. A dehumidifier plus drying out leaks and crawlspace dampness makes the environment inhospitable, which is the real long term fix.
Pull mulch back 15 cm from the foundation, keep gutters clear, regrade soil that slopes toward the house, and seal gaps around basement windows and bulkhead doors. A spring perimeter treatment is included in our protection plan.
